  • Noise Floor: Measured the amount of ambient background signals noise that makes communication between an Access Point and client more difficult.
  • Non Wi-Fi Interference: Identifying the effects of devices that are not Wi-Fi capable, but that contribute to the noise floor, such as Bluetooth devices, microwaves, motion sensor devices, fluorescent lights, etc.
  • iPerf Tests: Wyebot conducted bandwidth tests using an iperf server located on the same VLAN and in the same data center as the vendor’s camera server. These tests were designed to measure the actual data throughput against expected performance levels.
  • Voice and Video Test: Simulated Zoom call was performed and analyzed to provide metrics complete with a MOS score.
  • PCAP: Packet captures were taken and analyzed using Metageek Eye PA

Analysis and Findings

The comprehensive data collected by Wyebot provided clear insights that contradicted the initial assumptions about the Wi-Fi network’s inadequacy. Initial association the Wi-Fi network showed no problems.  The DHCP response time was recorded at 16 milliseconds, well below the acceptable threshold of 2 seconds.  AirTime utilization was consistently less than 10% across all 5 GHz channels.  Noise Floor and Non Wi-Fi interference analysis showed no anomalies. The iPerf test to the same data center showed a download speed of 76 Mbps and an upload speed of 101 Mbps, comfortably exceeding the vendors required threshold of 50 Mbps for both.  Even the simulated voice/video stream consistently measured a MOS score of 5 (highest possible value)

Advanced PCAP analysis showed no communication failures between the client devices and Access Points.  Packets were being sent and acknowledged as expected with retry rates of only 1%.

These results indicated that the Wi-Fi network was functioning correctly and was not the source of the latency issues affecting voice and video communications.

With the network cleared of any deficiencies, the focus shifted to the server configurations used by the client for voice and video communications.
